Montaldo Insurance Agency Limited has been the Malta agents of American International Group (AIG Inc.) since 1969, during which time we have built a strong relationship with AIG.  Despite the size of our local market, AIG have always given due importance to our operation.  Following recent European restructuring of the AIG group, Malta has been incorporated within the newly formed company AIG Europe S.A., registered in Luxembourg.  This company groups together all EU country operations, except for the UK, which has retained the AIG Europe limited operation in preparation for Brexit.

 

Brief History

 

The Company’s origins date back to Firm Joseph Caruana, set up in 1914 as a general goods merchant, which also included an element of marine cargo insurance.  The firm traded predominantly in the Mediterranean basin and Great Britain.  The firm’s owner, Joseph Caruana, was the maternal grandfather of today’s owner.  After the Second World War, and the premature death of Joseph Caruana, the firm passed on to his three sons.  They continued trading as general merchants, and branched into other industries, namely real estate, textile manufacturing and insurance services.  Over the years, the eldest of the male siblings Joseph Caruana Montaldo took over the ownership of the firm.  He further expanded operations into two main lines – textile manufacturing (including the setting up of the Wrangler Jeans factory in Malta), and insurance operations with representation of leading British insurance companies and brokers.

 

Following the enactment of the Insurance Business Act in 1981, Joseph Caruana Montaldo consolidated the activities of the four family-owned firms into a single entity, aptly named Montaldo Insurance Services Limited.  He became the Company’s Chairman and Managing Director and continued the constant growth of the company in insurance sector.  In 1980, Joseph Naudi Montaldo (the third-generation family member) joined the company and subsequently succeeded his uncle as Managing Director of Montaldo Insurance.

 

The company has been providing insurance underwriting, claims settling, brokerage and insurance consultancy services to local and international companies.

 

In 2014, the Company celebrated its 100 years in business, and in 2019, it is celebrated its 50 years’ exclusive representation of AIG in Malta.

 

Joseph Naudi Montaldo’s children, as fourth generation family members, have also joined the company after having completed their first degrees and subsequent MBAs.
